about
We wrote Sparky's First Dress to honor the men who express their strength and courage by choosing to wear women's clothing. In a culture that historically strips men of their masculinity for dressing non heteronormatively, we find those who experiment by wearing clothing outside of the male norm to be the manliest of all! Our inspiration for this song was our friend Uncle Sparky, who—since donning his first tutu at Burning Man four years ago—has embarked on wild wardrobe explorations that continuously challenge and delight.
We assembled the same line up of talented musicians for this track as we used on Second Favorite Man, including the wonderful Maurice Tani on lead vocals.
He longed to break free of the myths he’d been told
About being a dude, about being a man
He cried, “It’s all bull! and I don’t give a damn”!
When we put on our feathers and fishnets and lace
We wear ‘em like no one else can —
‘Cause it’s not about looking like one of the girls –
It’s about being more of a man.
The local Goodwill was the point of attack
He commandoed a raid on the women’s clothes rack
When he looked in the mirror his courage took flight
And he flung wide the door and stepped into the light
He took to the streets around old Union Square
In his shiny red skirt, and the tourists all stared
A few of them laughed, and a few of them booed
But a few hurried home and tried on a skirt, too.
When we put on our feathers and fishnets and lace
We’re changing the world on the sly —
‘Cause it’s not about looking like one of the girls
It’s about being more of a guy
In ruffles and spandex the tide surges forth
Calling all of our comrades to join in the force
And Sparky, in sequins, is blowing their minds
with me in my pinafore, marching behind.
So we put on our feathers and fishnets and lace
And wear’ em with courage and grit,
When it comes down to dressing the way we’ve been told
We’re just not giving a shit
When we put on our feathers and fishnets and lace
We wear ‘em like no one else can —
‘Cause it’s not about looking like one of the girls –
It’s about being more of a man.
